Your Follower Count Is Getting Less Interesting

Quick question.

Would you rather have:

100,000 followers and 700 people seeing your content

or

8,000 followers and 300,000 relevant people seeing it?

Exactly.

The feed doesn't care about your ego.

For years, brands treated followers like social media currency. More followers = bigger brand.

Except social media has changed. Your next customer doesn't necessarily need to follow you before they see you anymore.

Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and other platforms increasingly behave like discovery engines.

They aren't simply asking: "Who does this person follow?"

They're increasingly asking: "What might this person want to watch?"

And that's a very different game.

You know that post your team spent four hours designing? The algorithm isn't sentimental about it. People aren't either.

If someone doesn't find it useful, entertaining, interesting, surprising or worth sharing, they're moving on.

Follower count alone can't save boring content.

Small brands just got a bigger playground.

Which is actually good news for smaller brands.

Historically, brands with massive audiences had an obvious distribution advantage. Now a small business can create one genuinely brilliant piece of content and have it travel far beyond its existing audience.

Your potential reach is no longer completely limited by the community you've already built.

But there's a catch. Your content has to earn attention.

Stop making posts. Start making content.

There's a difference.

A post says: "We need something for Tuesday."

Content says: "We have something our audience might actually care about."

That shift changes everything.

Instead of asking: "What should we post?"

Try asking:

  • What would someone save?
  • What would they send to a friend?
  • What would make them comment?
  • What could teach them something?
  • What could make them laugh?
  • What could make them stop scrolling for three seconds?

Now you have somewhere to start.

And yes, social media is becoming search.

People aren't only opening social platforms to see what their friends had for dinner.

They're discovering restaurants. Looking for outfits. Researching products. Finding travel recommendations. Learning skills. Checking reviews. Discovering brands.

For marketers, that means captions, spoken words in videos, topics, comments and useful information increasingly deserve to be treated as part of discoverability — not an afterthought added five minutes before posting.

So should brands stop caring about followers?

Of course not. A community that actively chooses to follow your brand is incredibly valuable.

But follower count should be an outcome, not the entire strategy.

10,000 people who care about what you say can be far more valuable than 100,000 people who forgot why they followed you.

The question isn't: "How big is our audience?"

It's: "Does our audience care?"
